I was cleaning today listening to my IPod. I have all sorts of music on mine. My dad was a singer, he could do Al Green like nobodies business. He also did gospel music. They used to practice in our basement which was street level, we'd have kids and adult outside listening and dancing.
Even though he generally sang R&B he listened to all music, between him and my mom I learned to like all music. My kids are they same way.
Some of what I heard while cleaning:
Led Zeppelin: Kashmir & I'm gonna crawl
Aretha Franklin: Natural Woman
Run DMC : It's like that
Warren G: Regulate
Kid Cudi: Alive & Day and Night
Aerosmith: come together & back in the saddle
Deana Carter: Strawberry Wine
Everlast: what it's like, rock in my hand, turn your lights on- with Santana
Jodeci: Come and talk to me
Nelly: Errtime, hot in here
Don Omar: Bandoleros
Heavy D: Is it good for you
Van Morrison: Brown eyed girl, into the mystic
The Cult: Painted on my heart
And a bunch more.
What's on yours?

(66,293 posts)In German class in high school, our teacher would play current German pop music in order to enculturate us; not just learn the bare-bones of the language. It was fun.
I've got Nena's "99 Luftbalons", a love song by a guy named Peter Maffay, a terrific song by Glashaus called "Nur du" (Only you). It sounds like Alicia Keys, only in German. And it opens with a synthesizer rendition of the prelude to Mozart's Requiem. It's cool.
Also:
Concrete Blonde
The Beatles
The Doors
Evanescence
Pearl Jam
Bob Dylan
Lots of 60's-style big band jazz
Motown
Tons of classical music

(20,043 posts)on yours. Love, love, love Motown. Grew up listening to it.
My dad (biological) was German, he died while my mom was pregnant with me. I should learn more about the culture. I have an Aunt--not blood--but she's one of the few friends my mom has that knew my dad and can tell me about him so I grew up calling her Aunt. Anywhoo--she's German. That's how she and my mom met, they lived down the street from each other and my mom help to teach her English. You'd think I would know more about my German heritage.

(66,293 posts)I don't have a drop of German blood, but I love the culture.
On the other hand, I'm a Celt; Irish, Scots, Welsh, & French ancestry. And how many Celt bands, fiddle groups, & Gaelic singers do I have on my iPod?
Zzzzzzip!
Multiple song renditions:
Hallelujah, by Leonard Cohen. 15 or 16
The Rainbow Connection. 8 or 9
Let It Be. 11 or 12
Bridge Over Troubled Water. 10 or so
True Colors. 5 and counting...

When I was younger, teen years, my grandmother used to take me to the Irish festival (there was a name for I can't remember now)--granny's family came right from Ireland--they had the Irish dancers and music.
She got it in her head she wanted me to do be an Irish dancer, remember I was a teenager, I loved my granny so much my I would have sooner broken my legs than do that at 15.
Every freakin' summer to the Irish festival (the correct name began with an 'f' too) and her trying to talk me into that. The food was good though.

(66,293 posts)Have you ever been to Ireland?
one_voice
(20,043 posts)she was awesome.
No, I've never been. I'd love to go. I have relatives there, who know me, I don't have a clue who they are. My grandmother used to go every year, I guess that's how they know me.
They always said I was welcomed to come live there if I wanted. I don't even remember what part of Ireland, I'd have to ask my mom.
Before my grandmother died, she would talk about going there. How beautiful it was and that's what heaven would look like. Then she'd start yelling at the nurses.

(66,293 posts)And the people are very nice. If you enjoy drinking, you'll love it there. Once they find out you're a guest, your money won't be good in any bar in the country. I had so many people buying me drinks, it's a wonder I could still walk upright.
And if you want a bit of an ego kick, get out of the cities, and visit the smaller places where few tourists go. Once, I was relaxing at a little club with my friends, way out in the middle of nowhere. A girl slipped by our table, and accidentally spilled my beer on me. She was horrified, and tried to help clean up, saying "I'm sorry, I'm sorry!" the whole time. I kept saying "It's all right, it's okay, it's okay..."
She gave me a funny look and asked: "Where areye frumm?"
"I'm from the U.S."
"OH MY GOOOOOOD!"
Judging by her reaction, she didn't meet Americans very often. It was cute...

(20,043 posts)I like some, don't really follow anyone. I listen to about ten minutes, not bad. Not gonna lie, couldn't listen to it on a regular.

(2,208 posts)I don't think Metal Machine Music is meant to be listened to.
The joke is that Bob Ludwig, the guy who mastered the record, is the only person to have ever listened to the whole thing, because he had to.

I listen and even though I didn't understand it sounded nice. I liked the music. I could listen to that and it wouldn't matter that I didn't understand.
I listen to Spanish music and don't always understand all the words but often like the beat/music.

I like the blues too.

(19,361 posts)Your son and I would get along just fine I'm thinking.
The blues is a really diverse genre. Mississippi Delta, Chicago, Texas, West Coast. There's a lot to like, and just about something for everybody. Glad you enjoy it too.
