The Casbah of Algiers

A Casbah I believe means a fortified city and there are many casbahs in the Arabic-speaking world. But “the” Casbah is the amazing old city in Algiers that descends to the port, made famous in the 1936 French film “Pepe Le Moko” (“Moko” is French slang for a guy from Toulon) and the 1938 American remake Algiers, which used the same Casbah footage.

Unfortunately, I’ve read that the buildings of the Casbah today are in a bad state of neglect and many have been abandoned. I think it’s an extremely cool place that I’d love to visit for the incredible atmosphere of mystery surrounding it. Just look at the interior of the restored modern day Casbah home at the beginning of the next clip. Too cool.
