I can't drink more than a taste of wine without feeling a buzz, but I found something that can give me the appearance of "hanging" with the best of them:
Blackberry Merlot.
Anyone else have low alcohol drinks that can fit this list?

(64,931 posts)any sort of buzz while drinking it.
I don't know if you can still get it anywhere.

(64,931 posts)Funny, but to get into a bar in SLC, you had to have a sponsor. Basically you would walk in, and someone would sponsor you if you bought them a drink, IIRC.

(2,947 posts)One being a drink cannot be served in a restaurant out in the open. It I dubbed the "Zion Curtain". They either mix the drinks in the back, or the bars must have a section that obscures what is going on behind that enclosure. Those little rug rats must not see the bartenders mixing the drinks. And you must have a meal with your alcohol, unless you are in a private club.

(64,931 posts)Those were the places that required a sponsor. I had forgotten that's what they were called.

(53,339 posts)I remember going there during Army Advanced Infantry Training in 1967. At least we couldn't get into much trouble that way.
Later, I was briefly in charge of overseeing implementation of the Modern Volunteer Army Program in the Sixth Army area (Western states). That's when they were putting beer in the mess halls, but I don't remember if it was 3.2 beer. Probably was.

(10,237 posts)At some Jewish holidays toasts after prayers call for sips or slugs of wine --I do what the kids do and stay with the grape juice which looks like Mogan David and the rest of the kosher wines .

(21,020 posts)when I tell them I like Manischewitz Concord Grape Wine.
Of course, being very sensitive to alcohol, I can't drink very much, so a small sherry glass (4 oz. or less) of the stuff can last me for hours.

Most bartenders will make you a drink with the non-alcoholic ingredients alone and you can
drink everyone else under the table.
.
Most well-known is the Virgin Mary (Bloody Mary), but anything is possible.
.
You can do it at home, too -- most drinks are still tasty without the alcohol.

I finally stopped drinking on my motorcycle in the early-to-mid 80's (don't ask... though no
one nor nothing was hurt/damaged).
.
After that, I would have ONE single malt scotch on the rocks and spend the rest of the
evening drinking club soda with a splash of Rose's Lime (the "splash" is important -- many
bartenders interpret that as a "shot" and it's WAY too much). Nobody knew that I wasn't
drinking.
.
In the corporate culture of the 50's-70's 2- or 3- or more-martini lunches were often
standard -- ESPECIALLY if the lunch was a business meeting of some sort. In that alpha
male culture, NOT drinking was considered a weakness (you were assumed to be a
recovering alcoholic -- and often, you were), so people would often conceal the fact
that they were basically enjoying a soft drink.

I'll try the club soda and splash of Rose's Lime next time I get a chance.

(36,649 posts)That being said, if they have to flavor it with fruit juice it's probably not very good wine.

(46,684 posts)And I do recall bumping into an old acquaintance from High School who drank like a fish. Her astute reaction when she figured out my low tolerance, "How did we ever hang in the same circles?"
Maybe the God Lord was protecting me, because I don't recall "hanging" with her too often.

(21,020 posts)can't handle a lot of alcohol. Which is good.
Same thing with OTC and prescription meds. Most of the time I have to take a child's dosage.
Anyway, one thing I enjoy is a tiny glass of Harvey's Bristol Cream Sherry because it's one of the few alcohols whose taste I like.
I like the taste of Grasshoppers (mixed drink) but have to nurse one glass for a long time. Two glasses would knock me on my ass. Seldom have more than three alcoholic drinks per year.

(130,773 posts)but don't have a need to have the appearance of hanging with 'the best of them.' In fact, was/am married to one (who isn't drinking, and with whom I only seldom socialize.) BUT my daughters and their guys do drink, much more than I ever could.
May try Blackberry Merlot. Is it smooth? Do like some wines, and don't mind drinking Bloody Mary slowly.

(3,502 posts)Had no problem when I was young, but I never was all that much of a drinker and it seems like it takes practice. It really doesn't agree with me either, so I just stay away. On holidays I like the sparkling cider, especially the apple/grape. I would imagine that a virgin colada would be real good, too, but it's a lot cheaper and lower calorie to just get a diet coke or ginger ale.

I also don't eat beef. This gets beefeaters upset. Not sure why.
People are way too involved and caring about what I consume.
