My (literal) ground rules:
"Visiting" a state means any time you have set foot either on the state's soil itself, or on a building that is permanently affixed to the state's soil.
As such, if you have a layover and you exit the plane and go into the airport, that counts as a visit. However, if your plane has a stop over and you do not exit the plane and instead remain on board, that does not count as a visit.
Fly-overs do not count for the same reason. As do instances where you have driven through the state but never gotten out of the car.
You also have to have a conscious memory of the visit. So if your parents took you to a state as an infant (or if you were too drunk to realize where you were) that doesn't count.
So, without further adieu, here is my list:
Arizona
Connecticut (Pit stop only)
Delaware
District of Columbia
Florida
Georgia
Kentucky
Maryland
Nevada
New Jersey
New York
North Carolina
Pennsylvania
South Carolina
Texas (Airport only)
Vermont
Virginia
West Virginia
Visually, it's not all that impressive....but I have managed to hit all 4 contiguous time zones.

(43,173 posts)Of course, if your sole impression of North/South Carolina is South of the Border, that's pretty sad. But still.....

(6,261 posts)At first I thought you were talking about Mexican states, but I found it on Wikipedia.
I may have to revise my list to meet your conditions. I see you added 'conscious memory' to your criteria. I was conscious, adult and alert in all of those 47 states, but some have left no impression on me whatsoever and I remember nothing about them. Delaware, for example. Same with that small corner of Nebraska I drove through just to be able to tick the box for having been there.
auburngrad82
(5,029 posts)I live in North Carolina. It's a great state but there are still a lot of uneducated people in the rural counties around Raleigh. A friend of mine has a relative who didn't want to have to pay child support. His plan was to head south on I-95. He thought once he reached South of the Border he'd be home free because "U.S. law don't work South of the Border."
Sometimes I have to laugh or I'd cry.
We drove through South of the Border once and there is nothing appealing about the place.

(4,482 posts)I've never been in Cahoots. Apparently, you can't go alone. You have to be in Cahoots with someone.
I've also never been in Cognito. I hear no one recognizes you there.
I have, however, been in Sane. They don't have an airport; you have to be driven there. I have made several trips there, thanks to my friends, family and work.
I would like to go to Conclusions, but you have to jump, and I'm not too much on physical activity anymore.
I have also been in Doubt. That is a sad place to go, and I try not to visit there too often.
I've been in Flexible, but only when it was very important to stand firm.
Sometimes I'm in Capable, and I go there more often as I'm getting older.
One of my favorite places to be is in Suspense! It really gets the adrenalin flowing and pumps up the old heart! At my age I need all the stimuli I can get!
And, sometimes I think I am in Vincible but life shows me I am not.
People keep telling me I'm in Denial but I'm positive I've never been there before!
I have been in Deepshit many times; the older I get, the easier it is to get there.

(53,661 posts)Turned south and went through OK, then north and west in CO. Turned west and south into UT before heading into NV and CA then turned back to TX. It was the second go and pure insanity for a few months, driving through snow for some of them.
Did the trip again and went up to MT, across ID and a corner of UT, OR and finally WA. Later trips were much calmer back and forth, my directions were just 'left, right, left, right' from TX to WA on the interstates.
Saw the landscapes change dramatically over the years, not for the better with deforestation and strip malls everywhere. I've made many plane trips through the west over a span of thirty years, but those don't figure into your method.
Kids have to go to the bathroom and eat a lot, plus we had to bed down at the proper times. The last two TX to WA cross country trips were with pets, OMG. All of those things had to be figured into start and end times along with making reservations for lodging on every route both ways.
That unexpected jog through MO did result a pit stop and getting directions. But the day ended with the best chicken fried steak dinner we ever had at the first place we stopped in Muskogee, OK.
Don't know if I'll ever make it to FL since I don't know anyone and travel alone now. I've settled in for the long haul, now. I see a lot of beautiful landscape in FL from the pictures posted here at DU. I'd have to take a plane ride, can't handle driving and the cost of fuel anymore.
So that's the story on MO, and quite a bit more.
Tommy_Carcetti
(43,173 posts)We were driving to Rye, New York, but missed the exit and continued on into Connecticut. We stopped at a gas station, I used the restroom and we got directions. That counts enough under my rules but little else.
Interestingly enough, I've actually driven in Connecticut numerous times without stopping. This is because I've flown into the Westchester County airport, which is just inside the New York border. However, to exit the airport and get to the nearest expressway, you do have to drive through about a 1-2 mile stretch through Connecticut. But I don't count that as a visit in and of itself since I did not exit the car.

Explanation follows,
When I was a teen, even preteeen, My Father took us on camping trips to the East Coast every summer, sometimes through the North Eastern States. That'd be in the 60's.
In the mid seventies, I took two trips down the East Coast, taking a wandering trip back from Florida in my 62 Lincoln.
lived in SanDee 79 - 80 - took trips up the West coast, and down to Tijuana, thru the deserts to the East coast, back to San Diego, and early '80 drove back criss-cross to Toronto, Ontario Canada.
Glad I did it way back when, never be able to afford the gas, let alone lodging now!!
Fond memories.
In all my 14 months in the USA, only had issues with 2 people - none female.
Can't say the same since my return
