Dishwashers! Ugh! Are any of the new ones reliable?

I am about to go out of my mind. I just want a friggin dishwasher which works. I read most of the old archived threads on DU like anyone doing research would. The overall consensus was Bosch….but not so fast! Some reviews indicated that Bosch is plagued with reports of the foulest of foul odors and nobody can figure out why. Seriously, google it. Two reports mentioned materials used in the manufacture of the appliances and of course nothing can be done about that.

It is my understanding that Kitchenaide is not what it used to be and there were warnings about every brand out there.

One problem is that this is for a rental property, so if there is a problem, I will need to know about it and stay on top of it. I cannot rely on this tenant unfortunately. I also expect to be moving into this property in less than two years, so I want something that will work for me.

Has anyone here purchased a dishwasher in 2014 that works without odors and without problems? If so, please tell me which model. I even looked in Craigslist for slightly used dishwashers but there was nothing worthwhile to be found.

It's being delivered tomorrow along with the new Fridge (maytag), Stove (whirlpool) and overhead fan for stove (maytag). They all had great ratings which is good, but in the end how they work we shall see.

Have your dishwasher installer check the drainage lines and how they're run. Where the manufacturers put the drain in the unit will also tend to affect how much water doesn't drain properly, but that's usually part of the risk assessment in product design, and they'd rather have the possiblity of odor rather than some other issue.

I now run a "quick clean" cycle with 1/4 bleach and no dishwasher detergent once a month in my rental's Hotpoint that's about three years old. Have never had an odor issue in the year since I started doing that, and I haven't seen any drainage or ant issues either. (First hot spell we experienced after we moved in the rental, we had a terrible odor and ant infestation situation with the then "brand new" dishwasher...not anymore!)

They weren't very reliable anyway. In fact, there's a sink full waiting for me right now.
Thanks for reminding me. I hate doing dishes.

It's one with the stainless steel inside, and we got it for $350 at Best Buy (on their clearance rack; list was $800.)

HOWEVER, we live in a dry climate and spring is my OMG PLEASE Take a Drill to my Sinuses season, so my sniffer hasn't been stellar for a few weeks. OTOH, I would have noticed something smoky, electrical, melting polymerish or rotten. Nope, nothing like those at all.

Can't say what long-term longevity looks like, but so far, so good, and it is spookily quiet.

We did have a problem a long time ago when I first installed the previous dishwasher (a frigidaire that lasted 9 years, so not bad.) The hose from the bottom of the dishwasher to the garbage disposal should rise above the level of the inlet to the disposal so as to create an air trap. That seems to prevent the odors.

I put the loop in with a round-eyed zip-tie and a screw in the back of the cabinet. It also has the advantage of keeping the hose out of the way.

8. We bought a Bosch last year after our Maytag broke down after 3 uses

We first bought a Maytag to replace our old KitchenAid. The first 3 times it was amazing. Clean and shiny dishes ... and then it wouldn't let us program it. The control panel stopped working. Took a week to get a repair guy in to tell us that the control panel needs to be replaced ... which would take about 3-4 weeks. REALLY??? We used that f*cker 3 f*cking times. I researched that model and it was a very common complaint. Disappointing! After a lot of back-and-forth, we decided to just have them pick it up and ordered a Bosch ... build in America from Sears:

Germany’s Bosch produces dishwashers as well as cooking and laundry appliances for its own brand and its U.S.-based Thermador subsidiary in New Bern, South Carolina and La Follette, Tennessee. But the company plans to end U.S. production of its Vision line of washers and dryers this spring.

http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/news/2011/04/which-appliances-are-still-american-made/index.htm

We have not been disappointed. The top rack is adjustable in height, the dishes come out perfect, it is extremely quiet, and we didn't have any problems.

Actually, I think the Maytag was produced in Mexico.

Ours is build-in and it is very important that you measure the height...I had to bust out some floor tiles to fit it underneath the counter.

Good Luck!

He said to use the highest temperature (intensive) setting once a week, because it helps to get rid of grease that would otherwise clog things up.

I always used the auto setting and I had no problems, he mentioned that only using the eco setting usually creates problems.
