Sir Walter Raleigh the poet, soldier and explorer was arrested and beheaded in 1616 for plots against the king and to appease the Spanish after his crew ransacked a Spanish outpost in South America. His wife, Elizabeth Throckmorton, kept his head in a velvet bag for the remainder of her life.
