Nemo's quite the beautiful boy. He's been to the vet. He eats dry kitten kibbles, drinks plenty of water, uses the new litter box appropriately, and plays and plays. I have a few scratches while he learns when to keep his claws in and when to use them--hopefully he will. Thanks for the input you gave me about him when I first posted. Here he is being too cute:

and here he is taking a nap on the couch with me, upside down--four paws in the air, totally chilled:

(23,156 posts)You need to make sure you don't offer yourself (hand, arm, whatever) as something he treats as prey. Use toys for that purpose. Also, trim those little claws regularly. That will help a lot.
Lex

(22,845 posts)There might be some Maine Coon in him because of the big paws and tufty ears.
Lex
(34,108 posts)that I've occasionally caught glimpses of. None of them appear to be Maine Coon but I really don't know for certain.
distantearlywarning
(4,475 posts)We have two boys who looked just like that when they were that age, big paws and all. The shelter told us they were part Maine Coon. They grew up to each be 15 lbs+ plus of gentle, patient, fluffy feline love. If that kitten has any Maine Coon him, you are a very lucky owner - the breed has a well-deserved reputation for being sweet as honey, intelligent, and loyal like dogs. They call them the "gentle giants".

(22,271 posts)What a handsome boy! The fact that he's sleeping on his back like he is tells you he's completely secure. Whatever happened to him before you found him he's completely forgotten. And that kitten claws-all-out thing? It will last a few more months so be prepared to look like you've been hit with shrapnel before it's all finished. Kittens have two speeds with the claws, 1) completely in and 2) completely out. As they grow older they learn subtlety.
Give him a kiss on the head for me.
Lex
(34,108 posts)a kiss on the head for you. He's a soft fluff-ball right now and he does let me smooch on his head a little bit, but I do have to watch the claws--every minute is play time currently for him, when he's not totally sacked out asleep.
Le Taz Hot
(22,271 posts)he needs a pal. Consider finding him another kitten about the same age. He needs a companion. Right now you are his only entertainment. He needs to interact with another cat and they can teach each other how to do cat things. Seriously, taking care of 2 is no harder than taking care of 1 AND you get 2 times the love.
OK, I'm done now.
3catwoman3
(23,820 posts)I think the observation was made upthread that the only thing better than a kitten is two kittens. Absolutely true. The built in entertainment factor goes thru the roof.
If I had thought of it earlier in my life, I think I would have tried to get a job designing and testing cat toys. That would be so much fun!
calimary
(80,700 posts)They cuddled together in the little pen while everybody else was wandering around. We realized that we really didn't have the heart to separate them, so we took them both home.
FABULOUS IDEA!!!!! One of our BEST EVER!!!!
They adapted so smoothly to their new surroundings. They had each other to keep cuddling with, to sleep with, eat with, bathe with, play with, kept each other company. They were inseparable and astoundingly fun to watch and to enjoy! DAMN were they cute! Now they're big and adult and plump - he's mellow as can be and she's boss o' the house. We think they're pretty well-adjusted, and they fit in with the rest of the menagerie. Nobody seemed homesick, either!
distantearlywarning
(4,475 posts)It was such a good strategy I would never get just a single kitten again.
Kittens are so awesome, and also they are little wild unsocialized easily-bored hellions. When you have only one kitten, he/she torments the daylights out of you, usually at 4 in the morning on a work day, and finds all manner of mischief to get into and expensive objects to break.
When you have TWO kittens, they bother one another before bothering you or household objects. So they chase each other through the house and wrestle at 4 am, but you get to lay in your bed and sleep without a little sharp-clawed kitten batting at your ears because he is bored. They keep one another company, and they keep one another entertained. They socialize one another in ways that you just can't. They learn not to bite too hard or claw their playmates, because when they bite and claw the sibling yells and refuses to play anymore. They learn to compromise and let other creatures have their own way sometimes. They learn how to be loving towards, to care for, and to trust multiple beings at one time, which will make them friendlier with your friends and visitors when they are older. Lots of important life lessons are learned through interactions with the other kitten.
And the best part? You get to watch them together. There is nothing more adorable than two kittens being rambunctious with one another. I have the greatest picture of one of my cats (now a huge lazy boy) at about 10 weeks, with all four paws spread wide, leaping down on a paper bag that was inhabited by his brother. It still makes me smile when I see that picture, remembering how cute and funny they were when they were wee beasties.
calimary
(80,700 posts)I love to watch them groom. And it'll just be Mellow City for the longest time, and then all of a sudden, one of them explodes on the other and there is a brief, intense hissy-fit, and then everything subsides. Fascinating!!! When we first brought them home, they hid together, then ventured outward together, and now they just SO own the joint! And yeah, they take care of and entertain each other all day long, so you don't have to do as much. And when they'd curl up, upon and around each other, we'd often wonder if that's how they were in utero.
"They socialize one another in ways that you just can't." MAN! How true! How true.

(2,570 posts)I read Through everyones comments And i agree with
1- Get him a friend! You won't Need cable- You'll have 24/7 Kitty Cam! Priceless. 😼
Plus, They Groom Each other And curl up to sleep.
2 no Daclawing. It is Not humane- pure And simple And can leas to litterbox Problems.
Most cats like an upright scratching post. You can sprinkle some catnip on it to entice Him.
3 please neuter him. At the shelter i Volunteer at- they do it by Weight- 2lbs, which is usually around 2 months.
This will save a lot of problems down the road, especially with a male.
Enjoy your little guy! Cats are the perfect pet. Low maintenance.
TuxedoKat
(3,818 posts)He looks like a semi-long haired cat. Maybe part Maine Coon or Siberian? Does he make little trilling sounds? Maine Coons are known for that. He is beautiful whatever he is. If you can, try and feed him wet cat food too. Vets used to recommend mainly dry cat food for cat's teeth, but now they are recommending wet cat food because they kidneys stay healthier. Cats don't drink much water so the main way they get water is from what they eat. Having lost two cats to kidney disease I've pretty much switched to wet cat food, 95% of the time.
