Heaving

In Shropshire, Cheshire and Lancashire, Easter week boasted the ceremony of heaving. On Monday, a party of men go to every house with a chair and force every female to be seated in the chair which is then raised three times with loud "huzzahs". For this salute they are given a chaste kiss, or if not a kiss then a shilling. On Tuesday the same ceremony is conducted by the women.
