Does Deep Purple belong in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame?

Pro Very influential band; the band members are a kind of "who's who" list; "Smoke on the Water" is one of the iconic all time hits.

Con While the band tours a lot today, and toured a lot before their hiatus, they did not do much new, relevant work after the mid 70s (about 6 years into their career). Their career comes down to three "big" hits: "Smoke on the Water', "Hush", and "Woman from Tokyo"

I think they ignored Kiss for so long because they brought in such good annual publicity. And Bon Jovi can forget about getting in as long as the wife of one of the judges works for Bruce Springsteen's manager.

because some fools don't think so does not make the question worth asking

Of course Deep Purple deserves to be in the R&RHOF (years ago) - you don't need a fucking poll to determine that

Deep Purple and Yes are still shut out of the Hall of Fame. There are lots of others as well, but I think those two are the most glaring omissions.

Do you know how many young kids were encouraged to keep playing rock guitar after mastering that lick?

but I am sure there are members of the RAR HOF that are less deserving than Deep Purple (and YES as well).

I remember playing Smoke on the Water in high school pep band. If an electric bass guitar player did not show up, the band director played the bass part on his electric cornet. He had a mute plugged into an amplifier. The band director also wrote rhe music for every instrument in the band.

Seriously, look up the 'Made in Japan' versions of "Highway Star," "Child in Time" or "Space Truckin'" and then tell me these guys weren't one of the most talented rock bands ever. Ian Gillan, Ritchie Blackmore, and Jon Lord all in the same band - IMO only The Who could rival them for sheer greatness at each position.

Why is it so important? IMO, it's as bad as getting constant mainstream radio airplay. It's just corporate bullshit.
