Hoke Tide or Hoc Tide

Hoc Tide or Hoke Tide were feast days observed on the Monday and Tuesday after the second Tuesday after Easter. Some theorized it was to commemorate the destruction of the Danes in 1002 by Ethelred, but that occurred on St. Brice's Day, November 13. One of the practices of Hoc Tide was for men and women, on different days, to intercept travelers on public roads with ropes to extract tolls from them which they would use in charity, and to make church repairs. Women always collected more than the men.
