I have a well, and the water tastes great and is clean except for lime and calcium (mostly). The effect of these things is seen in the swamp box (evaporative cooler). I would have to replace the pads every year until I installed a filter. Now I have to replace the small filter to the cooler every year. The water for drinking, showering etc is not filtered. What I want is a large in line filter that I can place before the water gets to the house. I'm looking for suggestions.

(13,889 posts)It is in my basement and filters the water as it comes into the house. You should get your water tested first and then call a well company (the folks that drill wells) or a plumber to find out what kind of a system would be good for you. In my part of the world there is the Water Store that tests water and also sells the filter system. My system automatically flushes the system every two weeks. Hope this helps.

(20,886 posts)Every house I've taken care of has an R/O system. Reverse osmosis removes minerals. Cost depends on the size. Needs to be serviced a couple of times a year. There is a lot of waste water. This probably wouldn't be practical if you are in an area where water is scarce.
Not long after moving into a house in a large metropolitan area, we got the GE Smartwater system as a whole- house filtration system. There was nothing wrong with our water, per se, but it always tasted funny or chlorine-y, depending on the moment.
We change the filters quarterly, and you would not believe what they look like after 3 months. The main thing is that the water tastes better. It is difficult to change the filters, though; we've found that we're best off having the plumber come in every 3 months to help us out. If you're very handy, you maybe able to do it yourself, but we've found it more difficult than it seems at first glance.
On the other hand, it is not an expensive solution to funky water for the whole house.
PM me if you have more questions.

After reading the reviews from people who have well water, it looks like they like it too.

(23,272 posts)It cost $2500. There's a series of 3 filtration tanks and we've never had any trouble.
Its been in there almost 15 years and we never change any filters or mess with it. Its terrific!
