Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsLester Nygaard in FX's Fargo may be the most reprehensible character on TV at this particular moment
and that includes King Joffrey from Game of Thrones.
Inadvertently sends a hit man after the local bully who recently broke his nose, kills his wife in a fit of anger, allow the town chief of police to be shot in the back by the hit man, plants a gun in his nephew's backpack so he can frame his brother for Lester's wife's murder, revenge-fucks the wife of previously mentioned dead bully, contemplates cheating on his new wife in a hotel bar and then caps it all off by sending his new wife to her death (by case of mistaken identity) when he thinks the hit man is lurking in his office at night.
I may be missing a few of Lester's misdeeds but either way he makes Joffrey look like a slacker in comparison.

(5,842 posts)It's funny because even with all the fucked up stuff Lester does every now and then you still kind of root for him to at least get one over on Malvo.
Yesterday's final scene though makes you just want to see Lester in the ground when the show wraps.

(7,720 posts)I am enjoying this series, but there are a few things I catch almost every single episode that are ridiculous. For instance, one of the FBI agents in Fargo ask "Where's Bemidji"? Every single FBI agent in North Dakota knows where Bemidji is.
We never did find out how Lester was able to become a good insurance salesman with his own agency and how he was able to buy a new house in the country.
I also cannot figure out why Lester would wish to have anything more to do with Malvo.

(115,669 posts)and thought the same thing. Bemidji isn't exactly Chicago, but an FBI agent in Fargo would sure as hell know where it is. I think Lester became a successful salesman once he realized he'd gotten away with killing his wife and framing his obnoxious brother - weirdly, this gave him confidence, in a sociopathic sort of way, so having become less of a nebbishy victim kind of guy he got better at selling insurance. In fact, it made him overconfident, which is probably why he confronted Malvo instead of avoiding him.
He's turned into a kind of Walter White character. He broke bad when he discovered (or believed) he could get away with shit and get even with everybody who picked on him.
Malvo is just pure evil.

(15,696 posts)He makes Lorne Malvo look not so horrible now.

(115,669 posts)However, Nygaard is definitely racking up points in the horrible category.

(5,842 posts)Setting up the guy at the hotel to piss in the car gas tank only to then rat him out to the manager was pretty cheeky. Also, setting the two sons of his first victim against each other re the "inheritance" seemed pretty benign given they were both jerks anyway.

(20,176 posts)He's probably the best personification of the AD&D alignment of Chaotic Evil ever. There is no law, no internal code...he does bad things purely because he can and for his own amusement. There is no cause and no higher purpose.
Lester does things because he's selfish and craven...his evil is about self-preservation. There's an internal code to it, not that it makes any of the things he does less malevolent...just rational.
