Reading Coffee Grounds and Tea Leaves

Women would read tea leaves and coffee grounds to find out whom they would marry and what his rank would be.

"I have seen him several times in coffee grounds with a sword by his side; and he was once at the bottom of a tea cup in a coach and six with two footmen behind."

from Hazlitt's Dictionary of Faiths and Folklore.

As for the "coach and six and two footmen" you certainly would need a large coffee cup to see all that!"

The tea should be poured and drunk nearly to the dregs, the cup is then turned three times the saucer placed on top. The whole thing is then inverted so the liquid and some of the leaves are in the saucer. Those leaves remaining in the cup are those that are read.
