You're right, of course. But I grew up listening to baseball on the radio…and basketball, too. Demoiselle Jun 2014 #3

Soccer commentary less so than most American sports, I would venture:

"They've really come to play, Bob"
"That's right Phil, They're giving it 110%"
"The coach has told them that they CAN win baseball games".

Yes, I'm old. The basketball commentators worked their butts off covering all the moves, they didn't have time left for inanities. (Tom Gola was the Philly Warriors star at the time, so now you can all snicker about what an old person I really am.) And listening to baseball on the radio was a lovely summer pastime. The background crowd noises were especially beautiful, like a human cicada chorus. It will always be the sound of summer for me.

the guy NBC has for hockey, Mike Emrick. If I had to hear him call a shot around the boards careening one more time I was going to pull the TV out of the wall. Fortunately the series ended before I had to resort to that. He's always about a half a play behind and too busy yapping with his color guy about inane topics to keep up with anything actually happening on the ice.

I grew up listening and watching some great hockey play by play people on Hockey Night In Canada. Danny Gallivan, Don Wittman, Dick Irvin Jr. and Bob Cole all made the game come alive whether you were watching it or just listening in the background.
