Charter school sharing campus with public school

Just learned my kids school is going to share their campus

With a charter school called citizens of the world charter.

It was an awesome art and music magnet school.
I'm concerned. Does anyone know anything about this charter school? Why are they being given half a campus of a public school?

Never heard of them, but please don't confuse "charter" with "private" school. NYC_SKP Jun 2014 #1

It's different in different states, and may charter schools are, in fact, public schools.

I know of several that share resources (computer labs, shops, athletic space) with traditional public schools, often to the benefit of both populations.

I hope your research reveals goodness, and if it doesn't I wish you well in making things right!

with this arrangement. See http://www.nytimes.com/2014/05/12/nyregion/charters-public-schools-and-a-chasm-between.html?_r=0

NYT, May 11, 2014, Javier C. Hernandez:
But two decades since the schools began to appear, educators from both systems concede that very little of what has worked for charter schools has found its way into regular classrooms. Testy political battles over space and money, including one that became glaringly public in New York State this spring, have inhibited attempts at collaboration. The sharing of school buildings, which in theory should foster communication, has more frequently led to conflict.

And some charter schools have veered so sharply from the traditional model — with longer school years, armies of nonunion workers and flashy enrichment opportunities like trips to the Galápagos Islands — that their ideas are viewed as unworkable in regular schools.

In recent years, educational leaders, concerned about hostilities between the two types of schools, have worked to encourage warmer relations. In Tulsa, Okla., charter schools and district schools are working together to improve teaching quality. And in Spring Branch, Tex., charter school leaders are helping train district teachers and principals.

I think you'd have to learn more about how the arrangement is supposed to work in your school and then check the progress to see if they are meeting the goals of the space sharing agreement.

On the west side. This charter school has been pushed out from a neighboring campus. There is also friction with them at other locations. We have a meeting at the traditional magnet to inform parents this week so I'll see how things go. Thanks for the info!

We are getting a charter school already pushed out by another school. Other articles I read concerning citizens of the world included similar friction with a public school in Silver Lake and many charges of discrimination. Our campus is not under utilized and does not have empty classrooms. They've called a meeting this week to inform parents of the magnet school but since school is out I doubt there will be many in attendance. Thanks for the article!
