(11,833 posts)but I'm a guy. But hey that might look great on some guys too. I just wore shorts and a cool peach colored shirt and sandals. My friend wore all black, she's hip like that. We wound up walking her dog, going to get gelato, then talked ourselves out of driving a half hour to the party.

(33,987 posts)and what do people do at a summer solstice party?
(games? drinks? music? other?)
i only ask because i like to live vicariously through others. plus i'm genuinely interested.

(11,833 posts)We walked my friend's dog (beautiful border collie mix) and then got gelato at a cool outdoor espresso / gelato place. Lime/coconut and chocolate hazelnut gelato. Yum!
I still don't know what goes on at a summer solstice party. My friend told me that her friends are jazz musicians, so I'd guess they played music and looked at the sky.
I prefer to think everyone dressed like druids and ran around chanting. Just 'cause that's funny to me.

(11,833 posts)Happy summer solstice pfitz59! Here's some cool info from dictionary.com:
The summer solstice marks the longest day of the calendar year and the beginning of summer in the Northern Hemisphere. The term solstice is derived from the Latin scientific term solstitium. Containing the Latin sol- meaning the sun and sistere meaning to make stand. Today the term solstice is used to describe the exact moment when the sun reaches its northernmost point (around June 21) or southernmost point (around December 22) from the earths equator.
Summer lasts from the summer solstice to the autumnal equinox, one of two times a year when the sun crosses the plane of the earths equator, making night and day approximately equal length. Days continue to lengthen from autumnal equinox to the summer solstice, after which they begin to shorten.
William Shakespeare clearly had astronomy on his mind when he chose the title A Midsummer Nights Dream, a tale of enchantment that takes place on midsummers eve, or, as we commonly refer to it, the summer solstice. Shakespeare is also credited with the first-known citation of the phrase midsummer madness, a line uttered by Olivia in Twelfth Night after encountering a cross-gartered Malvolio. This seasonal transition was thought to be a time when witches and other supernatural beings caused widespread mischief. Additionally, some plants were thought to possess magical healing powers and bonfires were thought to ward off malicious spirits. Midsummers Eve is a national holiday in Sweden and Finland.
