When we moved to Nebraska in 1994 they had two Dem Senators and a Dem governor...
but over the next six years we lived there they turned as red as the football stadium
in Lincoln on football Saturday.

We moved to North Carolina in 2000...a progressive southern state...that voted for
Barack Obama in 2008 and then the rednecks, bigots and money guys got together to
take over the state in 2010-2012. There hadn't been Republican control of the
state legislature in over 100 years!

Ack! So here we are...still located in a deeply blue town (Chapel Hill) but
watching the state go down the toilet. Hubby is going to the Moral Monday
protest this afternoon. We have high hopes of dumping some of these
right wing a$$holes this year, but it will probably be 2016 or beyond before
we can really turn things around. In the meantime, the Repubs have done
tremendous damage to North Carolina.

He was once booed off the stage in Denver. The people felt Mr. Deutschendorf wasn't worthy of the name.

but his music will long outlive you or I. And, regardless of whether you like his music or not, he was the epitome of a progressive in terms of his environmental and related work.

My dad was in the Air Force and stationed there for several years. I do recall the first day there; we woke up on a July morning and saw fresh snow on the top of Pike's Peak. But I like snow and seasons and the cold wasn't that bad, not nearly as bad as Wisconsin, where we lived before my dad's transfer. Colorado Springs then was a beautiful sleepy little town of about 60,000. Now, I understand that its grown about five times the size and some of the old buildings have been torn down. As far as the people, I found them friendly and laid back, not nearly as insular and set in their ways as in the south, where my dad's family came from. I recall several of my junior high teachers speaking out in support of civil rights and Martin Luther King. A lot of my friends seemed to be JFK supporters, and they had older brothers and sisters going to the University of Colorado in Boulder and had liberal viewpoints and listened to folk music like Bob Dylan. Maybe I was too young in junior high back then to comprehend all the nuances of political thought of the people around me but I didn't find too many extremist dogmatic types, but maybe the world has changed. I'd like to go back there one day to see the old Victorian house we lived in on the beautiful tree-lined Nevada Avenue, the city's main drag.

Hope you enjoy Colorado. I know at least you will love the scenery and natural beauty and if you like to ski, it'll be great for you.

Granted, it was better than another ex girlfriend who played Barry Manilow non stop. THAT was BRUTAL.

I'd really like for progressives to stop deriding those who actually walked the walk. Yes, it has long been de rigueur to disparage his music and yes, he had problems that lead to his drinking arrests. But he supported environmental causes worldwide well before it was "cool" to do so.

And, if you really are that torn about moving to this beautiful beautiful and increasingly blue state, then I'm afraid I can't understand nor help you.

I feel lucky to be moving there so you can save the superior attitude for someone who might appreciate it more than I do.

And the Denver comment was intended as a joke. You know what a joke is, right? Do you think I really need mentoring from you on "respect?"

Given your attitude and desire to insult all things Colorado, I hope it is somewhere far away.

I came to Denver 39 years ago, lived there 20 yrs, Boulder for the last 19 and have never regretted it for a minute. There is lots to love and to do though it's expensive.
Not so many progressives in Colorado Springs or in Northern CO but those who live there work hard to protect our beautiful state and our neighbors.

We all joke about John Denver but he got it right. We're thankful that he was reborn in his 27th year and found the real Rocky Mountain high. Hope you will too.

and am mostly happy with the direction in which we're moving.

Stop and go traffic and it's not the roads. Sprawl all over. Up until about 2-yrs. ago I was able to ride my motorcycle back and forth to work. Now it's bumper to bumper. The Californication is now complete.

I hope you like it there more than I did. I made some friends in the years I was there, but I came away feeling that way too many residents prize relentless physical toning over personality development. I'm glad to be back in my home state of Texas.

It's a great place to live...I've been here all my life and love all 4 corners of our awesome state...even that crazy-assed town of Colorado Springs.

Once you get settled in, it may be time for a Colorado DU meet up!
