The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI just saw a promotion for the TV special, "Rudolph."
"Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer," that is.
It's 50 years now since it was first shown on TV.
I still remember back when I was little, (about 5 or 6,) having that snow monster scare me, a lot.
I might have had nightmares about him, I don't remember.

10 points for whoever knows the name of the girl reindeer who sang that. (without looking it up)
Am I right?

(16,330 posts)it comes up randomly when something's happened and you can't do anything about it. Somebody will break out into an operatic voice and belt this out. It does make you feel better!

(21,020 posts)62, I never saw that cartoon until my 20s.
To this day, I can never watch it without breaking into tears when the little dolly on the Island of Misfit toys says she has no more dreams left to dream.
OMG I'm all teary eyed now, FGS!!!
ahem.
Anyway, Thanksgiving at the usual family gathering, step-son-in-law says that someone in work told him he looked like one of the characters. He couldn't remember which one.
I looked at him closely and said, yep, bigod...
Yukon Cornelius!!
PS...I think my favorite character is Herbie the elf dentist

They don't make blockbuster movies today that can hold a candle to Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.

(14,061 posts)Yes, Land of Misfit Toys always causes my throat to tighten up for some reason.
Another show that ALWAYS gets me (I don't think they show it anymore) is The Little Drummer Boy. When our two oldest were little, we bought a bunch of VHS Christmas show tapes, one of which was Drummer. Whenever they popped it in, I had to leave the room. Couldn't bear seeing the lamb get hurt. It was a family joke, but it sure wasn't funny to me. Getting choked up now even thinking about it...gotta go.

(1,136 posts)As they are giving the misfit toys umbrellas to fall out of the sky towards their new homes... they did NOT give the bird that couldn't fly an umbrella. How is that possible? He couldn't fly?? I was horribly upset. I remembered that a few years ago when coworkers were talking about it coming on that night. I tuned into the end to make sure I remembered it correctly, and, yep, still no umbrella for the poor bird that couldn't fly.

(25,380 posts)a friendly voice urged us to stay tuned for upcoming programs and the nightly local news: "A business owner was shot in the face during an armed robbery today. Details at eleven." One moment you're enjoying a heartwarming children's story -- the next you imagine a masked intruder with a sawed-off shotgun breaking down your door and shooting you in the face. Now every time I think about Rudolph, I also think about getting shot in the face. If that freaked me out as an adult, what about the innocent little kids who were watching "Rudolph" that fateful evening? For all I know, there's a therapy group for those suffering from this Rudolph complex. If anyone hears about one let me know.

We laugh now at the show. When they show the dentist (Dennis?), character at the workshop, there is a guy in the background who looks a lot like my late father in-law.
His whole family gets a kick out of giving me gifts, that represent Karen, from Frosty. I have ornaments, stuffed Karen's, etc., it's funny.

...Mr. Magoo, who premiered as Scrooge in 1962.

(14,061 posts)Watched that all the time as a kid. That, and Charlie Brown. (I have the Vince Guaraldi soundtrack on my iPod and it's great music, by the way.)
Those were my two favorite Christmas specials. Never cared much for Frosty the Snowman, or The Grinch That Stole Christmas.

(12,017 posts)puts this on annually live. They use some of the original puppets/stop-motion pieces from the TV show. It is soooo good. The voice talent they have is perfect!
