When you buy a new big appliance and they haul away the old ones, what happens to the old ones?

The delivery guys will haul the old ones away but do they just scrap them or is there some place you can buy the working ones?

I ask because I'm replacing a washer and dryer. Washer's shot but the dryer has some life yet. I put it on Craigslist to give away and got a ton of responses. Some I could tell were just scrappers (which I discouraged in the ad) but others seemed like folks in a real pinch. I went with a volunteer from a halfway house but wished I could have helped a bunch the others.

My guess is the ones worth repairing are probably salvaged and resold. In_The_Wind Dec 2014 #1

I plan to buy a used washer from a local small store this spring.

Larger chains may just sell 'em for scrap.

that sells re-conditioned appliances. So some of them get repaired/rebuilt and resold at least.

There's actually quite a bit to get out of old appliances if you're willing to dismantle them. Most big wholesalers and retailers won't bother, though. But there's steel in the frames/cases and a lot of copper in the motors and wiring.

outside his house and put an ad on craigslist saying they were free to whomever came first. By the time he got home from work they were gone.
