Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsDoes the world really NEED a 7-disc "deluxe" version of Fleetwood Mac's "Tusk?"
I don't buy into the "brilliance" myth. This album was no "Astral Weeks."Fleetwood Mac will release an expanded version of 1979 album Tusk on December 4.
The double-length work was a departure from highly successful predecessor Rumours, and it was the most expensive album recorded up to that point, costing over $1m to produce.
The deluxe edition contains five CDs, a DVD and two vinyl discs, which offer the original remastered album, unheard session recordings plus singles, demos, remixes and and live tracks.
Tusk will also be available in 3CD and single-disc editions.

(27,630 posts)How many small mountains of cocaine were involved in the making of that one song, I wonder..?

(18,837 posts)I found songs like "Not That Funny" to be excruciatingly annoying (even worse in its later live incarnation).
I did enjoy the "Fleetwood Mac" album (first Buckingham / Nicks) when it was released.
And yeah, "Rumours" is probably everything everyone says it is, just like "Pet Sounds" was the same for the Beach Boys.
But "Tusk?" That was the sound of Lindsey Buckingham calling the shots with too much money, too much studio time, and too many drugs. Even genius has its limits and he kept rolling tape long after he ran out of ideas.

(27,630 posts)Just in case anyone thinks my "cocaine-fueled" comment was in some way unfounded. But, the music sounds great! No complaints here. I question the need for an entire album just to justify the cost of one recording.
"Pet Sounds" is a fun album, kind of good. But the Beach Boys were at that point burning up money. Edit to add: My Room was pretty darn good!

(10,098 posts)How much blow they were doing back then. I too have read accounts of the stuff all over the place. One of the shittier drugs out there.

(65,009 posts)I loved that album. Now, that was a long time ago, so i don't know that i'll buy this deluxe set. But, at the time, i found Tusk to be a work of art.

(18,837 posts)I've seen photos of the band from this era and they all pretty much looked like they went days without bathing. It's like the Eagles...they're all old rich guys now, and a lot of people have tons of fun humming "Peaceful Easy Feeling" in 2015, but my guess is that they were not a lot of fun to hang out with in the mid-to-late 70s, unless of course you were a rage-prone cokehead who liked to get into fistfights. Don Henley gets the most nods for being the biggest prick in the band because he's become a bitter old prick these days but I think Glenn Frey had him beat. He was the bully.

(100,067 posts)That album still rules (not to mention the 2014 Steven Wilson remix gave it a much more modern feel to it) and it's not quite as insane as some of the reissues that are available, but do we really need 15 different versions of one album in the same package?

(18,837 posts)...and would be interested in hearing what he did with "Songs From The Big Chair"...but 6 CDs?
I think the Kings of the Box Set (for 2015, anyway) have to be the Grateful Dead and the "30 Trips Around The Sun" set. 80 CDs...30 complete concerts, one from each touring year. They did a four-CD cash grab distillation, which is terrible, because they chose one song from each concert, and I'd bet the farm that they didn't pick the 30 strongest performances.

(18,837 posts)I could define "went pop" as anything that followed "Then Play On," but by the time of "Fleetwood Mac" (first Buckingham / Nicks) they were REALLY pop.
I thought that "Future Games" had a little bit of edginess to it...especially the title track. The rest of the Welch albums were hit and miss. I don't think he was really treated all that fairly by the band. He became the dominant force because they let him, and then they jumped on him for it. "Heroes Are Hard To Find" really isn't a "band" effort at all...it's a 50-50 split between a Welch solo album and a Christine McVie solo album with the band as backing musicians. It just feels really cold and detached, albeit in a professional sort of way, but definitely not the product of a joyful collaboration.
