http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation-now/2015/10/06/worlds-oldest-woman-116-eats-bacon-everyday/73444660/Susannah Mushatt Jones, 116, keeps a steady diet of bacon, eggs and grits for breakfast. A sign in her kitchen reads: Bacon makes everything better.
Named the worlds oldest woman by Guinness World Records in July, Jones credits her longevity to "lots of sleep," Guinness said. But her family members say she has lived a long life due to her love of family and generosity to others.
Jones was born in a small farm town near Montgomery, Ala., on July 6, 1899. She was one of 11 siblings and attended a special school for young black girls. When she graduated from high school in 1922, Jones worked full time helping family members pick crops. She left after a year to begin working as a nanny, heading north to New Jersey and eventually making her way to New York.
Lose the eggs and you've got me.

(7,661 posts)It was not too bad, been through worse. Funny thing is now I realize just how much fats I did eat before it happened.

(20,044 posts)Yes, right after my surgery just about everything gave me the trots, especially anything fatty. But after a while, your bile duct will expand a bit and form a kind of mini gall bladder that will store a bit of bile. I got my gall bladder out in 2008 and eat a normal diet.

(20,044 posts)I read a helpful hint, and it works. When frying bacon, add enough water to the pan to cover the bacon. The water helps to cook the it slowly and render more fat without charring the bacon. When the water has evaporated, cook for another minute or 2 to make the bacon nice and crispy.

Well, sure, if you cross the Autobahn (or I-95) on foot during rush hour, one out of ten thousand people will survive that, too.
I still don't like the odds.

(2,003 posts)Only 10% of smokers develop lung cancer (though I've read 20% in other literature).
Two out of three smokers will not die of a smoking-related illness (lung cancer, heart disease, emphysema, etc.).
Granted, these odds are still significantly higher than those of non-smokers.

(54,059 posts)In my wife's rural area of Germany, for example, many of the farmers worked with all sorts of chemicals tanning leather, etc. It seems most of the ones she knew smoked and developed cancer sooner or later. I'm sure the chemicals contributed plenty to the statistics, and the combination was probably worse than either of the two factors individually. Taking birth control pills and smoking seems (statistically) to enhance the cancer risk considerably as well. One of our best friends got cancer at 32, put up a brave fight, but it spread everywhere quickly--lungs, breast, brain, and she died at 36.
It is also noteworthy that 100% of smokers stink horribly to non-smokers, with the stench emanating from their hair, breath and clothes, and are only excepted from the suffering by the fact that nicotine dulls olfactory and taste nerves, so that they don't notice it themselves. We hear constantly from former smokers, who suddenly notice the odor (olfactory nerves recover their ability to detect), "but I never stank like THAT!" Oh, yes they did.
At any rate, a one in three chance of causing myself to get a horrible, slow-killing disease is not worth starting to smoke for me, quite aside from the fact the fact that I can't stand the stink and it's expensive here in Europe. I think Abraham Lincoln had the right attitude: "What is a cigarette? A stinking weed with fire on one end and a fool on the other."

OK, then everyone EXCEPT your mom.
I don't suppose she'll be anywhere near Düsseldorf in the near future, so it's not an argument we'll need to have

Our bodies like routines. We adapt to them, and they reduce stress which is good for overall health.
