Of course, that's his job; it's what they do (like those Geico commercials).
He wakes us up demanding to be fed at about 6 am. This morning it was 5:30. So I get up and feed him, because if I don't, he will meow endlessly. If I kick him out of the room, he scratches at the door, making an even bigger racket.
This isn't a big problem on the weekends, since I can just go back to bed, but during the week, I have become so sleep-deprived, it is honestly affecting my quality of life. Not to mention work.
I have tried putting up a barrier leading to the bedroom, but nothing really seems to stop him.

(3,818 posts)And what do you feed him? If you are feeding him kibble with a lot of grains (carbs), he may be digesting it too quickly. I feed grain-free canned food and raw and don't have this problem with my cats. Anyway, you might try feeding as late as possible in the evening with the aforementioned food. You could also leave out a dish of Cat Milk when you go to bed too and a few cat treats to help tide him over.

(16,245 posts)Usually between 6-7. I feed him a special kidney diet. Two small cans a day. He doesn't seem to eat more; it just goes to waste (and it's terribly expensive) if I give him more.
I don't know what else I can give him while he is on this diet.

(46,179 posts)My cats get free-fed grain-free kibble; both are of healthy weight.
When I get up in the morning, they get a small portion of grain-free canned food. Which, of course, they are impatient for.
I scheduled the canned food for when I get up on purpose. If my rural electricity goes out, they are my back-up alarm. During the work week I'm up at 4:30; it's a luxury to sleep in until 6. On summer time, since I don't have to go to work (except I'm there anyway this month,) I'm up at 6, so the cat begins at about 5:30, getting in my face, meowing, poking, etc.

(13,452 posts)They only get canned food when visitors come, or once or twice a week. They are for that very sociable and love visitors.
I have friends who dole the food to their cats and their cats are FAT. ALL of them.

(16,245 posts)It's all wet and it's all the expensive kidney diet stuff.
But he did this even with the dry food I used to feed him and that was with his bowl kept full all day.
So I'm not sure it's hunger exactly.

(13,452 posts)There was that dry food from China that caused liver damage. There are a couple of brands I will not buy.
Good luck to you and your cat.

(16,245 posts)He's also hyperthyroid, and it on meds for that. Sometimes those medications can cause kidney problems.

(16,373 posts)The type you get to clean out your computer. I keep it by the bed and just spray it in her general direction. It frightens her enough that she will run off and wait at least 30 minutes before approaching again. It doesn't hurt her and it lets me sleep a few minutes longer. Good luck.

(9,359 posts)I had a cat named Trouble who liked to sneak out of the house. One night I kept hearing the cat meow and I kept yelling for her to stop.I finally got up and opened the bedroom door and I didn't see the cat.
A couple hours later I finally got up to go to work and couldn't find her. I was thinking she was probably just hiding after yelling at her. I opened the door to leave and I see the shadow jump down from the roof and run into the house.
It ended up she snuck out and was outside my bedroom. Window all night.
Needless to say, she never ran outside again.

(11,791 posts)One of my three dogs wakes me up every morning, Monday through Sunday, wanting to eat and potty. I get up regularly around 515 or so, to work. If I don't immediately get up and feed him at his desired time, he sits inches from my face and stares at me.
I travel a ton. When I'm gone, do you think the dog wakes up his dad at 515? Nope. Dad can sleep until 10 if he wants.
Frustrating.
