http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2016/02/us-marshals-forcibly-collecting-student-debt.html

The other night at work a young woman told me that she would voluntarily go to jail if it meant she could get all her debts erased. At 63 years old, you can be forgiven for assuming you've heard it all, but, in my entire life, I have never heard anyone talk like this. She was serious. I explained to her what debtor's prison was and how it worked and why we abolished it in the USA. She didn't know any of this. I then found myself going on to explain to her how it was being brought back by loan companies who find a friendly judge who will "accidentally" send a summons to the wrong address so you don't/can't show up in court. Suddenly you have a bench warrant for "failure to appear." The cops stop you for a broken taillight. They arrest you because of the bench warrant and you can't get out of jail until you pay all the old and new charges. And now this.

We are taking a long step backward in this country to a place we don't want to return to. It didn't work then, it's not working now.

It reminds of that old joke, "the beatings will continue until moral improves." Ugh.
