Jeannie is trying to drag me into the 21st century. She updated her smart phone
today, and as it turns out, if I use her old smart phone it would only add as much
to the monthly bill as I was paying for my old flip phone. I'm a semi-retired
bricklayer, and would rather build a long wall than figure this thing out. But I'm
making slow progress, adding contacts, apps, etc. Maybe there's a bit of
hope for me yet....

(7,471 posts)I have a dumb old cell phone. It is a slide. I can call, text, keep my contacts in and up to date.
It is not a new, fancy phone but is capable of internet access, has a camera, does all kinds of things about which I know nothing. Scares the heck out of this old timer.
Last Christmas, my granddaughter made a cute---and on the button---comment in front of the group of us while at the dinner table.
"Want to scare Grammy? Buy her a 'Smart "Phone for Christmas'. How right she was.

(46,179 posts)My first year with a smart phone I was constantly heard ranting about the "stupid smart phone."
To be honest, I don't use mine for nearly as much as other people do. Even though I've got the biggest I could get, this touch-typist has still not managed to do anything fluently on a little touch keyboard. It's s-l-o-w to type correctly, and I refuse to send typos and spelling, capitalization and grammar slops, so I don't text as much as others do. I can google things, but I struggle with seeing only a tiny portion of the page I'm on, and trying to scroll around to read the whole thing, so I don't do much with that.
I've never figured out how to stream music or video, and probably wouldn't, anyway, since I don't pay for that much data. The first day I used the phone I went over my allowed data downloading ringtones.
I don't use many "apps," either. The most useful, and most used, is the navigator. I do take pictures...many, many pictures. I "share" them to a drive when I'm at work; there's wifi there to keep my data usage down. Other than pictures, the navigator, and occasional google searches when I have a quick question about something, I use my phone to:
1. Tell the time.
2. Leave messages or texts, or receive messages and texts. I don't actually TALK much on the phone.
3. Keep track of my local weather.
That's about it.

with blue jeans?. The down side of smart phones...

(54,256 posts)Miz t. and I have two flip phones from Consumer Cellular.
$32.93 a month for both phones and 250 minutes of voice.
That's plenty for us.
More than enough.
No text or photos.
Just 'talk'.
Yes, I'd love to have all the swell stuff you can get with a 'smartphone' but it just costs too damn much for a geezer in retirement.

(25,816 posts)I get 804 a month and it barely covers my bills. I'm lucky to own my place.
But I was spending $32.50 a month for my flip phone and am now getting
this one for $35. Besides, Jeannie forced me into it.
