There is diginity in a good job if you appreciate it.

I've had bad jobs in my time and they were demeaning experiences. Just think of all of the people in this country who work for crap wages. They must feel terrible about it, but they have nowhere else to go. But wages are only half of the equation. People also need respect to feel good about their jobs. I had a job not long ago where I was paid half way decent, but management at that company micromanaged and treated their employees like unruly children. That's a drag, too.

I've run across people who have good jobs and who are respected, but they don't seem to appreciate what they have. Maybe they don't know what they really have. I am not going to be one of those people. I've got a good job now with good pay and respect, and I'm not going to take it for granted. I guess maybe you have to have been around the block a few times with crappy jobs to really appreciate a good one when it comes around.

Then you won't take it for granted.

Taking something good for granted is the first step towards losing that good thing.

You're in a very good place, my dear Tobin!

I couldn't agree with you more.

When I became a supervisor and later a manager I remembered what it was like to:
not be respected
not know what is expected of you
not have the tools or information to do your job
never be thanked
not be treated fairly
to be lied to

You cannot replace the above with money.

When they shut the factory down and I had to lay all of us off (including myself), I was startled to hear from many of the people at their exit interview that I was the best boss they ever had. I thought I was so so at best.

and I did actually check for posts by you the last time I was on to see if you had had any luck yet, but I didn't
have any luck finding those posts.

I don't know why managers don't respect their employees. If feels really good as a MANAGER, too. I don't work outside the home anymore, but the last time I revisited my last place of employment as a manager, everyone in the back room came flying out and almost knocked me over hugging me. It's a pretty wonderful thing.

other stores that were struggling. This wasn't about being a 'nice guy' softie. Genuine respect means setting the bar
high and watching everyone succeed beyond what they thought they could do.

It's not the job that defines your character. It's the character you bring to the job.
