I am trying to get a machine for sleep apnea that would help my high blood pressure and weak heart
Medicare pays 80% with a co-pay of 20%.
Living on $800 per month does not allow me to fork over 20%
I might be able to borrow a couple of hundred dollars from relatives and friends but that probably will not cover the expense
I also need surgery to remove a blockage from my throat-$800 does not cover that
The fact my older daughter died needlessly from lack of medical care because of expense-just makes me think
maybe this is the way my nation eliminates the poor without taking out a gun and killing them
considering this is the only developed nation that does not have universal health care makes me have little respect for this nation

(20,139 posts)I know that may sound like an odd question, but if you, for example, have a $1500 balance, go ahead and pay it down by $1220. That way you've spent down the amount needed to qualify for Medicaid, but you'll still have use of it if you need it. You could also prepay your rent if you're a renter.

(8,747 posts)They might have a used machine they can give you. I donated one of my old CPAP a number of years ago just for that reason. They passed it onto another patient.

(18,312 posts)"rent" as in long term and after 5 years it's yours -- I'm an RN for a Medicare Advantage Plan. You are not required to use just one DME provider. Whichever specialist is ordering this for you should have a case manager (like me) or social worker that can help you find a DME Provider that will allow 1) payments or 2) rental of the equipment where your out of pocket is lower or nil.
Have your insurance card, and go here
https://www.medicare.gov/supplierdirectory/search.html
This is the government Medicare directory. This is the link to medical suppliers. enter your location and it will give the medicare suppliers of DME in your area. Call them, one by one, explain the situation and ask 1) if they will take payments or 2) if the machine can be rented
