All 5 stray kittens now have roofs over their heads

The orange female stray cat we've been feeding, had five kittens on or about July 13th. She had them under one of our hemlock trees, and then moved them against our house wall. I built a small lean-to over them for shelter, put some towels on the ground, etc. There are two orange kittens and three tortie kittens. The mom, who we call Ginger, is very friendly.

At three and a half weeks old, the kittens began to venture out of the "den" on their own. Two went missing overnight one night, but we found them under the porch the next morning. That upset us, so we borrowed a large dog cage thingie from a neighbor. After several revisions, we moved the kittens into it so that they couldn't escape, but allowed access for mom cat. A large tarp provided shelter from the rain and sun. I made a custom kitten-sized litter box and put it in the cage, and added other comforts. We began to wean them, and they took to the litter box quickly.

We managed to get three kittens adopted directly into good homes. The two remaining kittens were about 7 weeks old. On 8/27, we took them to Peaceable Kingdom (a no-kill shelter). They were going to receive their shots, anti-worm medicine, etc., then go directly to a foster home that day. From being born under a hemlock tree, to a makeshift den, and finally to homes... what a relief!

On Aug. 30, we took stray mom cat (Ginger) to be spayed. They also gave her an anti-worm shot, rabies shot, distemper shot, flea & tick treatment, claws trimmed, and notched her ear for spay id. She was also negative for feline leukemia & feline hiv. Total $35 because a pet store chain gave the shelter a grant. She's recovering well and still using the shelter. One day at a time. Photos are of one of the kittens and mom.

From a cat rescuer here, thank you indeed for your efforts. Thank you for getting involved instead of looking the other way. Thank you for taking their needs into account and providing for those needs. But most of all, thank you for getting Miss Ginger fixed so that the cycle will not repeat.

Bless your heart!!!!

We already have three house cats, and our female doesn't like Ginger at all, or we'd probably take her in. Still trying to find a home for her.

I live with cats who barely tolerate each other-- it isn't much fun when they get into a spat, but things have mellowed somewhat

Good luck with that

We had strays around the house and naturally, some of the females had kittens......all about the same time. We trapped the females and had them spayed at a clinic that did all that for free..........shots etc.
The kittens we brought inside the house. There were five of them. Got them socialized enough to where a no-kill shelter will try to adopt them out. We told the shelter folks that if they couldn't adopt them to a loving home, to call us and we would take them back. They did seem to fit in okay with the rest of the cats we had in the house.
Good luck to you.

And each and every one of them has been a stray that needed a home. One was pregnant when I found her; she had the kittens in my closet and I kept two of the five - found good homes for the other three.

I've always believed they know what you've done for them, and they truly do appreciate it. They're wonderful pets.

I think animals know when a human helps them, and saves them from a hard life. Thank you. The momma cat is a beauty, and the kitten adorable. I hope they all live healthy, love filled lives.
