Seattle approves $15 minimum wage

Seattle approves $15 minimum wage in 'historic victory' for workers
Move will benefit around 100,000 working people in city and is expected to give momentum to campaigns across the US

Seattle city council has unanimously voted to impose the highest minimum wage in the US at $15 an hour in a “historic victory” for the widening movement to lift low paid workers out of poverty.

The incremental increase over several years will benefit about one quarter of Seattle’s workforce, particularly women and minorities, as it raises the lowest pay to more than double the federal minimum wage. The vote is expected to give momentum to campaigns across the US, from San Francisco and Chicago to New York state, to raise the incomes of minimum wage workers after Republicans in Congress blocked President Obama’s proposal for a national increase.

But Seattle’s law will be closely watched for its economic impact and for threatened legal action by local franchises of fast food corporations, such as McDonald’s and Subway, some of the largest employers of low paid workers in the city, which are seeking to be classified as small businesses in order to win more years to implement the increases ...

says $15 is just about the minimum wage to support the 2 adult household in Seattle, Washington.

This is now a real starter wage to build the old traditional American dream.

$7.25 and $10.10 are both too low anywhere for a family life even to start, unless of course you have 2 laborers in the family (making what we used to pay just 1 - and now Seattle has as a minimum wage).

Gee, what happened to the other half of our wages?

over the next TEN (10) YEARS?????????????????

Why am I not impressed. Why do folks allow this? What a slap in the face and if you think that 15 dollars an hour in 2024 is impressive....it won't be. I felt the same why when the Maryland politicians were hand slapping over 10.10 in 2018. We are certainly easy to please.

If things are as bad as they say (they are) then why not 10.10 in October 2014 and 15.00 in January 2015. I understand that it takes some time to redo the books and readjust the budget, but when things go up for us with goods and services, they NEVER give us a decade to "get used to the change"......HELL WITH THAT! Change it now and don't fuck with us which is what they are doing. I am so sorry to DUers for getting pissed but I am because the politicians will get titles like Bold, Caring, Humble, Honorable and that is all crap!

has always hedged on implementing these minimum wage increases.

Have to be incremental or it is inflationary for customers, job destruction, the bosses have to adjust their financial management and expectations...

When a program is implemented that pisses off everybody, you have successful legislation!

When you have a program that pisses off just the bosses...are we there yet?

Maybe not, but getting closer!

I've critiqued her enough for other things, but in this campaign, she was the one who got it kicked off and fought for it all the way through.

However as others have stated, it's not enough. We need a living wage based on the COL in each area and tied to the COL, so that that living wage goes up when the COL goes up. In addition to this, we need "job sharing" AT FULL PAY AND BENEFITS or some other mechanism, so that everybody who wants a job, HAS a job. After all, $15 per hour (or ANYTHING per hour) doesn't mean squat if you don't have a job. And this should be paid for by the capitalists out of profits instead of by raising prices.

And I don't want to hear about the poor corporations and their profit margin. No worker should worry about corporate profits because the corporations certainly won't worry about you having a roof over your head, food to eat for you and your kids, or clothes on your back.

After that, we need to take down the system so that we don't need to worry about this shit ever again.
