With gas prices steadily making their way into the $4 range this summer, it's no surprise that people are getting fed up with how light their wallets feel after fueling up. One Kentucky town has decided to tackle the problem in an unexpected way: with socialism.
Thanks to a pricing feud between fuel distributors and town officials, gas prices in Somerset, Kentucky, have been averaging about $3.74 a gallon, a price that residents are saying can be a solid fifty cents more expensive than most surrounding areas.
The city's fueling depot, which is sourced from a local refinery and services all city vehicles, sells its gas for just $3.10. Now Somerset aims to pass their savings on to locals by creating a city-owned fuel depot in the middle of town.
Their goal? To undercut private sellers and drive down prices through heavy competition.

Which has worked, by the way.
But anyways, I LOVE Kentucky's idea here!

(4,889 posts)When I was in high school (1974) my dad had a repair shop that also a gas station. He would not raise his prices with everyone else so the distributor discontinued deliveries.
But I do agree with democratic socialism and if "we, the people" don't want to give up our sovereignty to multinational corporations then we shouldn't.

Does anyone else remember that the municipal-socialistic electric utility in Los Angeles did NOT brown out while Duke & Co-Conspirators dicked around with the rest of Southern California?

(11,481 posts)Exchange the "profit motive" for an administrative charge which is almost always much less than profits. That was one reason Big Insurance and their toadies in Congress fought even the Public Option in the ACA. They can't compete with a well run public option in ANY area, so they have to ban it.
I do look for this to be outlawed ASAP. When they can't compete, they use the power of the state to ban it.
