I like Edward G. Robinson

I think he's vastly underrated these day, where people know him mostly from a few impressions (or from Chief Wiggim) but the original was not the world's greatest actor, but he was solid. And he wasn't afraid to play a character thinking. Bullets or Ballots, Little Ceaser, Double Indemnity, Illegal - lots of great roles.

He WAS type cast, and he was productive in an era where ganster movies were popular.
Some of his later work gave him more varied roles.
Interesting guy.

Where Edward G. shines. He plays the role as well as his character plays his cards. Some tremendous supporting roles there, too. Joan Blondell is a stand out in a minor role. Also, Karl Malden, Ann Margaret, Rip Torn, Tuesday Weld, as well as Steve McQueen in the title role. A minor gem of a flick, often overlooked.
