I'm feeling incredibly sad. I just found out that Bill Morrissey died. And he died over a year ago. I'm a big fan of his and I didn't know it until today.
If you don't know who he was, here's wiki's article about him and Bill singing his song Hellhounds on my trail.
Morrissey was born in Hartford, Connecticut. He seems to have found his craft and his own voice in the American country blues of Mississippi John Hurt and Robert Johnson, the pure country of Hank Williams, the Kansas City jazz of Count Basie and Lester Young, and the New York folk songwriters of the 1960s.[citation needed] His eponymous (i.e., self-titled) first album released in 1984 on the Reckless label, and then re-recorded for the Philo label, includes the song "Small Town on the River", a song about a small town in New Hampshire after the mill closes.
Over the course of his long career, two of Morrissey's eleven albums received Grammy nominations and several earned 4-star reviews in Rolling Stone.[1] Stephen Holden, for the New York Times, wrote, "Mr. Morrissey's songs have the force of poetry...a terseness, precision of detail and a tone of laconic understatement that relate his lyrics to the stories of writers like Raymond Carver and Richard Ford.[2

(2,252 posts)I saw him live a couple times (he was mostly East Coast, I mostly West), have all his albums and a copy of his book.
I posted a comment a few days ago on a DU thread including lyrics from Bill's song North: Death With Dignity
I was sad when Bill died. He and Greg Brown did a great album together, Friend of Mine (1993).
In 1994, Greg wrote a song The Poet Game with the verse:
And we sure got along.
Reel-to-reels rolled across the country near and far
With letters poems and songs..
But these days he don't talk to me and he won't tell me why.
I miss him every time i say his name.
I don't know what he's doing or why our friendship died
While we played the poet game.
I don't know if Greg wrote that about Bill, but it seemed likely to me. Bill wrote moody, odd songs and, though I only met Bill at a show, exchanging dollars for a CD, I thought he might be a difficult spirit to know.
But we don't need to worry about Bill now. I got a letter from him just the other day. He said "It's a great life here in heaven!"
Yeah, I know, everybodys always surprised to find him here

(1,922 posts)He never got the recognition that he deserved, but that never seemed to bother him. I had no idea that Bill had passed away.
