(2,173 posts)If that wasn't the case, how would we have LOL Cats? And Tarder Sauce (a.k.a. "Grumpy Cat" is EVERYWHERE!
I throw copyright notices on my favorite shots, but those are easy to remove with a crop and I absolutely hate watermarks.

(14,910 posts)I've had two of my photographs taken from my Flickr and Facebook page and utilized in commercial applications.
If a picture of my dog ends up with "DERP!" written across it, I am not going to make much noise about it. However if one of my Adirondack photographs are being used to sell a service/product by a guiding service, I expect to be compensated or at the very least permission requested for a photo credit.
Photography is not my source of income, I'd starve otherwise. However I do enjoy it as a hobby and feel flattered that others would feel moved enough by one of my photographs to use it on their website...I just want to be recognized for it.

(4,483 posts)really isn't about expectations but disseminating some rather well organized procedural information on how to effectively handle an intellectual property issue should the need arise. Quite frankly the fact hat these procedures exist would tend to refute your proposition that one has no expectation of ownership.
Personally I'm rather careful about what, where and how I choose post photos online. I also dislike watermarks, I find them as effective a security tool as taking ones shoes off at the airport which is why I tend to use Digimarc on photos.

(4,483 posts)Is an Invisible Watermark technology and service. It imbeds code in your photos that can't be deleted and follows the file no matter how many times it has been copied or edited and also provides a search service that will track your images across the internet.
