Moth, not moon.
This is a female. Males have larger, fuller antennae. The Luna Moth is endangered in some areas.
They're very hairy
They have the neatest antennae
and a pretty "eyespot".
She stopped by last night.

(2,173 posts)They stop in to munch on our butterfly bush (more like a tree). The numbers were really down this year. I'm concerned.

(90,758 posts)I don't recall where I read about it but they are lower in numbers currently. Has to do with both drought/rainfall/herbicides. Fewer migrating to Mexico for winter.
We get them here but it's gotten to be rare to see one.

They don't have a clone species other than the viceroy and their caterpillars are completely different in appearance. The caterpillars get huge eating the parsley but we've never found a cocoon on any of the plants. It's sort of confusing.

(2,173 posts)It would take a little hunting. They're all named DSCNxxxx.JPG. All of our cameras are Nikons. I'll try to hunt one up this weekend. I can at least isolate them based on date - the caterpillars are basically a July to August thing around here.
