Related: About this forumEnjoying my backyard the other day.
Some days, I feel like it is paradise. And when I have to mow I think there are too many corners. But summertime makes me happy out here, even with all the mess and disorganization.

(18,219 posts)And all my weeds are wildflowers. In reality, it is chaos, but I call it a cottage garden because they are both crowded---even if mine is not planned or cared for. Oh well. I love it.

(130,773 posts)I'm NOT taking pics of weeds on my patio, which I'm working to kill with vinegar. There ARE a couple of 'wildflowers' out there!

(36,424 posts)What the little box on the post in the first one? A bat house?
Curmudgeoness
(18,219 posts)it is a birdhouse that looks like an outhouse. It even has a tiny two-seater inside. I bought that at a craft show at a church where they were selling things made in Appalachia. I have been collecting birdhouses to put on all the posts of the deck instead of those ugly balls they put there.

(18,219 posts)there are humungous trees back there, causing a lot of shade. Off and on through the growing season, there will be blooming flowers, but most of it is usually green because it grows well with all the shade. I don't mind. You have to find a way to enjoy what you have instead of wishing for what you can't have. And all those annuals that flower profusely just do not like shade, besides that all the plants there are perennials (meaning no work).

(2,825 posts)I see lots of enchanting nooks and crannies.
I'm wondering if you might have a toad living in your midst. I bought a cute little "toad house" once and waited and waited , but no toad. Finally, a friend brought me a toad cause she said she had a lot of them. Loved my toad, but I think I should have requested more than one.
Curmudgeoness
(18,219 posts)I had no friend to bring me one, or more. I do think more than one is a prerequisite for a population.
It is just too urban to have amphibians, or it seems that way. But there is a lot to find in those nooks and crannies....and there were a whole lot more before all the feral cats showed up in the neighborhood.

(301 posts)my yard looks like a jungle. I wasn't allowed to do a lot of stuff like gardening for 2-3 months after I fell, so everything got way out of hand. Just out there chopping away for the last few weeks, yard is winning
Curmudgeoness
(18,219 posts)Just give up and enjoy the jungle. All my chaos is just about maintenance-free. It is a plant-eat-plant world there, where the strong survives. And flourishes.

(18,219 posts)I do erase some of it and replace it with a | as was suggested on an old post in the DU group on flickr. That was all I ever learned about posting photos here, but I knew there were better ways.....I was just too lazy to learn them. To be honest, I was just so excited to figure this much out.
