Switched at Birth and Deaf Identity

Are there any fans of Switched at Birth? I've been a strong fan of the show. I have been wondering what people might take from the portrayal of deaf identity in the show, particular through Marlee Matlin's character. She's not sympathetic, and she's particularly defensive. On other boards, people seem to equate her activism with discrimination and promotion of cultural superiority. I don't quite see this, but maybe I'm wrong?
