Union: At least 36 employees at Tucson UPS distribution center sickened with COVID-19

TUCSON, Ariz. (KOLD News 13) - Officials with the Teamsters Local Union No. 104 said Thursday they believe 36 people working a UPS distribution center in Tucson have tested positive for COVID-19, three of whom have been admitted to intensive care units.

The union said in a news release the company is recruiting employees from New Mexico, Colorado and Utah to the Tucson facility to “compensate for disruptions related to the outbreak.”

Schumann said, moving forward with its COVID-19 response, the company needs to be more aggressive when it comes to testing, contact tracing and isolating potentially infected employees.

“I would ask that they handle this in an aggressive manner, that they mandate testing. I would like for them to improve their contract tracing. They are going by the bare minimum of the CDC guidelines,” Schumann said. “I would like for them to give relief to the people who are doing this day in and day out for them.”

1. Another group of "expendables"

In our economy- those who deliver for business. Capitalism must continue at all costs- even if it means the UPS drivers get sick.

2. Gotta friend who works at UPS

At Sky Harbor airport (Phoenix) and said he heard 50 workers tested positive. He said they were told that the Tucson location was closed.

3. Local union calls for UPS distribution closure amid possible COVID-19 outbreak

TUCSON, Ariz. (KOLD News 13) - Teamsters 104 union officials are calling for the UPS distribution center in Tucson to shut down its operations to deal with what it calls a “serious” Covod-19 outbreak at the facility.

“I really want them to shut down the building down. I want them to mandatory test everybody. I want them to completely disinfect that building from floor to ceiling, wall to wall,” said Karla Schumann, secretary-treasurer of Teamsters 104.

Schumann said the first case appeared at the center on Silverlake Road in Tucson May 6 and “has spread like wildfire and still does.”
