Cochise County Sheriff Dever dies in car crash

Larry Dever, a four-term Republican sheriff for Cochise County, was killed in a car
crash near the northern Arizona town of Williams Tuesday night, according to authorities.

The vehicle rolled over about 7 p.m. off a gravel forest service road, according to an
official from the Coconino County Sheriff's Office. No other vehicles were reported to be involved.

Coconino County Sheriff's officials would not disclose the location or the type of vehicle Dever was driving.

Dever, nearly always wearing his signature cowboy hat, gained national prominence in the
debate over the enforcement of illegal immigration. The county shares an 83-mile border with Mexico.

Its not hunting season yet. This looks fishy.

"Coconino County Sheriff's officials would not disclose the location or the type of vehicle Dever was driving"

on edit "Dever was driving up to meet one of his six sons for a 2-day family hunting trip in Coconino County when his vehicle rolled on a gravel U.S. forest service road about 15 miles outside of Williams, Cochise County Sheriff's spokeswoman Carol Capas said.

Seriously? Hunting season is the only time you can imagine being in remote areas away from one's home?

I hate that the articles focus on his border activities and support of Brewer and Phx repukes bigoted BS, because he was a GOOD sheriff. He took care of a large rural county with limited resources and additional problems few other counties face (those same border issues, which is why I can't find too much fault for those actions on his part even though I completely disagree with them and told him so).

I have had a couple personal encounters with the man, he rescued me a couple of times when I had vehicle problems. He grew up knowing my Grandfather and some of his friends. His family and in-laws are a part of county history. He is one of a small handful of Arizona republicans I have ever given a vote to.

I am saddened for his family and for the community. There is an empty saddle for Sheriff Dever.

One of my friends (who is a Democratic activist and community organizer) shared this link on facebook:

http://www.reagancoalition.com/articles/2012/20120921003-examiner-arizona.html

He found it via the facebook page "I will NOT vote for Obama in 2012". I don't know why he was snooping in wingnut land but he at least left a comment (which you can upvote).
