Los Angeles proposal: Raise carpool threshold to five people

The threshold to ride free in one Los Angeles freeway’s toll lanes may be raised to five people in a car.

The LA Metro board will vote Thursday on the proposed pilot program for the Interstate 10 express lanes. The current requirement is three people during rush hour, two people during non-peak times.

The toll for the I-10 lanes maxes out at $15.55 for the full 14-mile length, between interstates 5 and 605.

Since 2014, solo riders in the lanes have increased by 58 percent, a new LA Metro report says. Of all the users, 65 percent are solo drivers. Three-person carpools make up 4 percent and vanpools 2 percent, according to a 2018 Metro count.
