Florida reports another 6,336 coronavirus cases Monday, 48 more deaths

Health officials warn that the virus is becoming easier to catch as the rate of positive cases hits 17 percent.

After a Fourth of July weekend that saw novel coronavirus infections surge at record-breaking speed, Florida’s health officials reported an additional 6,336 infections on Monday, bringing the total number of tracked cases in the state to 206,447.

In the 24-hour period since the Florida Department of Health released its Sunday update on the virus’ spread, the state has attributed 48 more deaths to COVID-19, the respiratory infection caused by the virus. As of Monday’s report, the virus has killed 3,778 across the state since health officials logged the first Florida infection on March 1.

An additional 150 residents Florida residents were hospitalized, according to Monday’s report, raising the total number of admissions to 16,045.

Florida’s mounting deaths have increased the state’s seven-day average to 48 lives lost per day, the highest since early May.

And over the past seven days, from Sunday to Sunday, the number of coronavirus cases in Florida grew by 59,036, records show. That’s the highest number of cases Florida has reported over a one-week period since the pandemic began.
