NEW BEDFORD – One in three manufacturers in Massachusetts report difficulties hiring production staff, according to a study released by the Advanced Manufacturing Regional Partnership Academy.
“These findings provide us with strong evidence that Massachusetts workforce development and educational institutions face a significant but targeted challenge,” said UMass-Dartmouth Professor Michael Goodman, who is leading the Advanced Manufacturing Regional Partnership Academy effort, in a press release.
“Our findings are consistent with recent MIT research that also finds that, while the scale of this challenge is more modest than some have claimed, we can solve this problem if we can strengthen the connections between those employers with very real workforce needs and our vocational high schools, community colleges, and workforce development agencies.”

The study reported a dismal number of manufacturing firms that are involved with educational and workforce institutions. Seventy-three percent had worked with local comprehensive high schools, 69 percent with community colleges, 76 percent with four-year universities, and 83 percent with workforce investment boards.
