Catapult your unwanted pumpkins after Halloween

QUINCY – If that pumpkin on your porch survives the Halloween tricksters, you can smash it yourself on Sunday and help Boy Scout Troop 6 at the same time. The troop will hold a Punkin Chunkin event from noon to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 1, at Pageant Field.

Scouts have constructed a trebuchet– a safer type of catapult– that is capable of launching an 8-pound pumpkin over 130 feet.

On Sunday, visitors can bring their pumpkins to Pageant Field, launch them and watch them smash. Scouts will load the trebuchet securely, but a visitor can pull the trigger.

The cost is $3 per pumpkin or $10 for four pumpkins. Scouts will have pumpkins for sale for anyone who doesn’t have one, but still wants to get in on the fun. Proceeds will benefit the troop.
