AARP wants a utility monitor

Rick Karlin, Capitol bureau

It’s no secret that this past winter’s cold temperatures sent utility bills soaring and with that in mind, AARP is pushing the Legislature to establish a utility rate monitor who could advocate for consumers on the regulatory front.

The position could be created by lawmakers and to drive the point home, AARP officials released a poll among Albany area voters aged 50 and over finding that three-quarters don’t believe their lawmakers are doing enough to help when home energy costs go up.

The Assembly has already passed a watchdog bill and AARP members gathered outside the Senate chambers earlier on Tuesday to make their case.
