Sen. Hoylman Bolsters ‘Conversion Therapy’ Ban Push With New Report

Liz Benjamin

Sen. Brad Hoylman is releasing a report on the harm produced by so-called gay “conversion therapy” – a controversial method of “treating” young people in an effort to “cure” them of their preference for members of the same sex.

Hoylman, a Manhattan Democrat who is himself gay, is sponsoring legislation that would ban mental health professionals in New York from practicing sexual orientation change efforts on individuals younger than 18. Proposed penalties range from censure to suspension or revocation of a provider’s license by the state and a civil penality of up to $10,000. The bill is modeled after legislation that was passed and signed into law in California, which, along with New Jersey, are the only states that have instituted such a ban.
