City pushes undocumented youth to apply for federal benefits

Gloria Pazmino

City officials announced on Wednesday the administration will launch a public awareness campaign to encourage the city's undocumented immigrant youth to enroll in a federal program that defers deportation for those who arrived in the country as children.

Nisha Agarwal, commissioner for the Mayor's Office of Immigrant Affairs, said the city is targeting nearly 79,000 potential candidates who may not be aware of the benefits of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, known as DACA.

"DACA comes with a number of benefits for undocumented immigrants," Agarwal told reporters in City Hall's Blue Room on Wednesday, including "deferral of deportation, as well as work authorization, access to valid state identification and through that the ability to get a driver's license."

President Barack Obama introduced the program in 2012, extending protections to certain undocumented youth who came to the country before their 16th birthday, as long as they meet residential, criminal background checks and other education or military requirements.
