First StartUp NY firms are named

Rick Karlin, Capitol bureau

The first dozen firms in Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s Start-Up NY tax-free new business program are being named today, with a cluster in western New York and downstate.

Some are new ventures spinning off from existing firms, some are research and development initiatives affiliated with colleges and universities. They are looking at new drug development for treatment of MS as well as traumatic brain injury, and stem cell engineering to name some examples. There is also some software development.

There is a 3D engineering firm as well as one that is working on meatless meat, that is bio-engineered meat products that don’t rely on slaughtered animals.
