Nearly 40% of parents who applied for public school pre-K did not get a spot

Nearly four out of 10 parents who applied for a spot in a public school pre-Kindergarten program got shut out, and will have to seek entrance in a community-based organization, officials said Thursday.

"Starting today, some parents are going to find out that yes, they got a space, others will find out that they didn't get their first choice," Mayor de Blasio said of the acceptance letters that were scheduled to go out Thursday to parents who applied to get their children in pre-K programs at public schools.

The city received 41,178 applications for 26,411 seats - a 35% jump from last year, officials said. About 4,500 more children got accepted into full-day seats than last year.
