Astorino supporters invoke D-Day in fundraising push

Jon Campbell

Supporters of Rob Astorino are using the 70th anniversary of the invasion of Normandy to raise funds for the Republican gubernatorial candidate—branding Gov. Andrew Cuomo a “tyrant.”

Screen Shot 2014-06-06 at 3.19.30 PMThe D-Day “money bomb”—in which supporters pool their campaign donations on a single day—is being led by Hector Miranda, a politically active Poughkeepsie resident. Both Miranda and a spokeswoman for Astorino said the GOP candidate played no role in organizing it.

The effort has its own dedicated website, rob4ny.com, and a YouTube video that urges viewers to “honor (D-Day veterans’) sacrifice” by supporting efforts to oust Cuomo and elect Astorino, the Westchester County executive. At one point, the video—first posted in late April—says there’s a “solemn obligation” to “remove tyrants,” as photos of Cuomo flash across the screen.

In a phone interview Friday, Miranda said the D-Day imagery—which has been criticized as insensitive—is appropriate. According to the website, the effort had raised about $13,000 by 3 p.m.
