Children join protest against 91st Street garbage station

David Giambusso

More than 100 schoolchildren were deputized into the 91st Street Marine Transfer Station battle on Friday, as they marched up and down York Avenue carrying signs and wearing bright blue t-shirts that read "Pledge 2 Protect."

The children's parents and guardians said it was time to hear the youngsters' voices.

"I look around and I am baffled," said Kelly Nimmo-Guenther, head of Pledge 2 Protect, the community group formed to fight the garbage transfer station—a battle that has now spanned two mayoral administrations. "How can the city put a garbage dump on top of these children?"

The station, already under construction, is next to Asphalt Green, a sports and recreational center frequented by about 34,000 children, according to its leaders.
