Canandaigua joins fracking bans

Steve Orr, Staff writer

The city of Canandaigua has joined the roster of New York communities to prohibit drilling for natural gas.

The City Council voted 8-to-0 Thursday night to adopt a local law that permanently bans natural gas exploration and the storage, treatment or disposal of drilling wastewater disposal within city limits.

The city at the foot of Canandaigua Lake had previously enacted a temporary moratorium on such activity.

Cities, towns and villages in many parts of New York have adopted bans and moratoriums in reaction to the possible resumption of the drilling of high-volume hydraulically fractured wells.
