More NY bridges in dire need & no funds available for public works projects
Newburgh's Lake Street Bridge (Rt. 32) to be closed indefinitely
Newburgh Public Works Superintendent George Garrison was driving across the bridge Thursday and noticed a severe dip in the road, said City Council member Genie Abrams.
Garrison called in City Engineer Jason Morris, who examined the span Friday and notified the state Department of Transportation, since Route 32 is a state road but is maintained by Newburgh through the city; Newburgh also owns the Lake Street Bridge.
The city's consulting engineers, McLaren Engineering of West Nyack, joined Morris in an inspection of the bridge Saturday, Abrams said.
The road deterioration possibly is linked to a city sewer line that runs through the lower bridge structure, an official said. That sewer line has been leaking, causing corrosion in the metal arch holding up the bridge, resulting in the dip in the road.

* more decay due to long delayed repairs. The 1886 bridge is so bad they haven't figured out what to do with it, the 1950 (Rt9W) bridge is now entering it 2nd year of repairs its open but not completed. We have two other bridges under repairs one from the 50's and the other from 1932. The storm damaged bridge from Irene still hasn't been repaired and perhaps another 2 yrs. Eventually north and south traffic will cease, on all the state highways w/o bridges your not going no where fast. Tens of thousands of cars and truck will be trying secondary city streets which frankly have seen much repair since the 80's. This should be interesting since the short cut road is like a mine field and its small weight limited bridge is itself in need of repairs.
